COP28 to be Hosted by UAE: A Milestone in Global Climate Action

The United Arab Emirates is gearing up to host the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28), marking a significant moment in the global fight against climate change. Scheduled from 30 November to 12 December 2023 at Expo City, Dubai, this conference promises a paradigm of inclusivity, innovation, and transformative action.

Understanding COP

Emerging from the Rio Summit and the launch of the UNFCCC three decades ago, COP has been the pivot of global climate discussions. Member countries convene annually, evaluating climate measures and determining international ambition. The landmark Paris Agreement was birthed at COP21, setting the goal to limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels by 2100 while fostering adaptability to existing climate impacts.

UAE’s Commitment to Climate Action

Ever since its foundation in 1971, the UAE has been at the forefront of the global climate agenda. Being a region accustomed to extreme heat and scarce water, addressing climate change is not just a global commitment but also a local necessity for the nation. By hosting COP28, the UAE further cements its position as a regional leader in energy and sustainability, focusing on holistic solutions that promote both environmental and economic progress.

What to Expect at COP28 UAE
COP28 is not just another conference—it is a call to the world to intensify efforts against climate change, aligning with the ambitions of the Paris Agreement. It champions the principles of transformation, solidarity, pragmatism, and inclusivity, hoping to translate dialogue into decisive action. Two distinct zones will characterize the event:
  • The Blue Zone – Managed by the UNFCCC, this area will be open to accredited parties, observer delegates, media, and global leaders. It will be the epicenter of formal negotiations, along with an array of official side events ranging from discussions to cultural happenings.
  • The Green Zone – Under the aegis of the COP28 UAE Presidency, this zone will serve as a platform for non-accredited delegates, including youth groups, NGOs, the private sector, and indigenous communities. The emphasis will be on dialogue, innovation, and solution-driven discussions on climate mitigation. Various technical conferences, panels, and activations are set to take place here, showcasing contributions from the private sector and emphasizing the importance of collaborative action.
Additionally, a plethora of ‘fringe’ events organized by various stakeholders will occur around the main conference, adding layers of discourse to the main agenda. Who’s Joining the Discussion? COP28 UAE is projected to be one of the major international gatherings of 2023. Anticipated to welcome over 70,000 delegates, the conference will see participation from Heads of State, global leaders, NGOs, private sector representatives, youth groups, and many more. As the highest decision-making process on climate issues, this convergence is set to shape the future of climate action. As the UAE undertakes a two-year leadership role, with the 2023 global climate summit at its core, the world eagerly awaits the outcomes of COP28 and the new pathways it will carve for a sustainable future.
